Music Therapy Internship
Infinity is excited to offer a University-Affiliated Internship site for music therapy students at the final stage of accruing their clinical hours before sitting for the national board examination. While we are currently a university-affiliated program, we hope to apply for our National Roster in the near future. We currently have a relationship with Berklee College of Music and Belmont University. We are open to building relationships with other colleges and universities to expand access to private practice placements for music therapy students. Are you a music therapy student looking to build your resume but still have coursework to complete before moving on to your internship? Click HERE for an internship program specifically for YOU!
Start/ End Dates: Early/mid September-early/mid April (due to the summer internship programs that we run, we do not offer an alternative start date)
Schedule: Interns work a 40hr week schedule Monday-Friday. Schedules will include a combination of daytime, afternoon, and evening hours in order to meet the needs of our clients. Some days may be longer than 8 hours and some days may be shorter than 8 hours. Our interns have schedules that closely mimic that schedules of our staff music therapists in order to prepare them for the professional world. Interns may be asked to modify their schedule in order to provide them opportunities to attend marketing events, conferences, or other professional events to build their competencies as a clinician and a professional.
Population: Interns will be exposed to a variety of clientele during their internship experience. Although the exact clientele cannot be determined until closer to an intern’s start date, Infinity provides music therapy to children and adults with developmental disabilities, mental health disorders, and neurological needs. We work in private homes, public schools, nursing homes, correctional facilities, foster care, and more. We strive to provide our interns with exposure to as many populations as possible during their internship.
Location of Sessions: Interns will be expected to report to our main clinic located in Southington (Plantsville) a minimum of two (2) times per week for staff meetings, supervision, and music therapy sessions. The remainder of the intern’s caseload will be located throughout Connecticut. Days are typically pocketed out in various regions of the state in order to provide the intern with diverse clinical experience. At times, the intern may be able to commute with one of the staff clinicians.
Professional Experience: Our interns receive in-session supervision for the duration of their internship from three or more supervisors. During the course of the internship, interns transition from observing, to conducting one intervention, to building up their caseload to a full-time caseload. In addition, the intern will take on up to seven private clients to see without a supervisor present. Interns will participate in weekly supervision outside of sessions, will attend weekly treatment team meetings, and will have opportunities to present to the clinical team. Interns will be included in marketing events, mock interviews, and other activities to ensure the intern is prepared for the professional world.
Available Materials: Interns have full access to a wide range of materials during their internship. The intern will have access to office supplies, a computer, printer, laminator, and binding machine during their time at Infinity. In addition, interns have access to a large selection of drums, shakers, tambourines, jingle bells, boomwhackers, movement materials, costumes, props, visuals, books, and more. The intern is responsible for maintaing their own liability insurance, background checks, cell phone, and a reliable vehicle for the duration of the internship.
Benefits: Interns are allowed up to five missed days due to illness/personal reasons and will be excused to attend the national music therapy conference if they so choose to go. At times, supervisors may be able tp provide transportation. All interns will receive individual and group supervision. Free coffee/tea is available at our clinic (its the small things, right?). Interns will receive coaching and supervision through the MTBO Toolkit to help them develop stellar resumes and interview skills.
To Apply: Application materials must be received by March 1 for a September start date of the same year. Interviews will be conducted in March/ April for selected candidates. Please submit the following items as a PDF via email to Jona Jeffcoat, MT-BC, Director of Services at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please submit the requested videos via Dropbox or a Youtube link.
